10 Twitter Tools Used by Social Media Experts of 2016

With so many Twitter tools out there, it’s hard to know which ones to trust with your Twitter account management. So why not take a look at what the social media and industry experts are using! Here are ten Twitter applications and tools used by some of the top Twitterers.
The following list is presented in alphabetical order:

Bit.ly

bit.ly home page
Bit.ly is just a URL shortening service right? Wrong! Used by @marismith@techcrunch, and @problogger, a free Bit.ly account will give you access to a dashboard where you can shorten and share links to multiple Twitter accounts. You can also see the stats for any Bit.ly links you share through your dashboard and plug your Bit.ly API key into Tweetdeck, Twitterfeed, or Seesmic to get stats for links you share through those applications as well. As an added bonus, you can even create your own custom short domain to match your brand so you can have branding similar to Mashable’s on.mash.to and Amazon’s amzn.to custom URLs.

Buffer

bufferapp.com home page
Buffer is deemed the smarter way to tweet, and is used by @tweetsmarter@jaybaer, and @askaaronlee. It allows you to simply schedule your tweets to be spread throughout the day so you don’t go through a reading spree and inundate your followers with 20 tweets within an hour. You can also get great analytics on your tweets which will help determine what your audience loves, or doesn’t, out of the content you share as well as the times of day you get the most action on your tweets.

CoTweet

cotweet home page
CoTweet, used by @nealschaffer@chrispirillo, and @emarketer, is considered a Twitter marketing tool for companies who want to engage, track, and analyze conversations about their brand. The free version allows you to manage your Twitter accounts, collaborate with multiple users, track clicks and limited analytics, schedule tweets, keep conversation history for 30 days, and more. The enterprise version (starting at 1,500USD a month) allows integration with Salesforce, advanced user roles and permissions, workgroups, and full analytics.

HootSuite

hootsuite home page
HootSuite is one of my personal favorites as far as Twitter management is concerned, and is also quite popular amongst the social media elite including @chrisbrogan@tweetsmarter, and @tamar. It is a freemium tool, meaning that you can use the free plan if you have fewer than five social profiles to manage. But the Pro version for unlimited social profiles including enhanced analytics isn’t too steep at only 5.99USD per month.

Paper.li

paper.li home page
Paper.li is a unique application that allows you to collect tweets and curate them manually or automatically in a newspaper-style format which can be automatically shared daily on your Twitter account. Used by @scottmonty@guykawasaki, and @leeodden, this app is a great way to collect the top tweets from your followers, people on a specific Twitter list, or even anyone who mentions a particular #hashtag. It does drive a nice bit of traffic to sites mentioned by top users, so while some people may not like to be mentioned, others greatly appreciate it!

SocialOomph

socialoomph.com home page
SocialOomph is another freemium service used by @mike_stelzner@smallbiztrends, and @jeffbullas that allows you to schedule tweets, track keywords, extend your Twitter profile, and much more with an unlimited amount of accounts for free. If you choose to go professional for 29.97USD, you get additional features such as Facebook scheduling, tweet via email, have others update via email, manage DM spam, broadcast DMs to all Status.net followers, and again, much more. Plus, for an additional 3.97USD you can automate following those who follow you and sending welcome DMs to new followers.

Triberr

triberr.com home page
Triberr is an invite only community used by @lewishowes@seanmalarkey, and @nealschaffer that allows you to join “tribes” of like-minded bloggers in order to expand your reach on Twitter. Simply plug your RSS feed in and members of your tribe will tweet each new post. As a member, you can set yourself up to do automatic tweeting of other member’s posts or manual tweeting when you have reviewed and approved of the posts. I personally just copy my Triberr tweets into HootSuite for full scheduling control.

TweetDeck

tweetdeck home page
TweetDeck is a desktop Twitter management tool used by @jasonfalls@problogger, and @marshallk. It has features similar features to HootSuite in terms of creating columns to organize your Twitter activity as well as the ability to send longer messages using their Deck.ly service which creates a shortened URL that directs followers to the rest of your tweet beyond 140 characters. I love the interface of this one, but since I use multiple computers, it makes more sense to use a browser-based application instead of one you have to install on a local machine.

Twitterfeed

twitterfeed home page
Twitterfeed, used by @sengineland@amyporterfield, and @cindyking, allows you to add RSS feeds (yours and others) to be shared automatically through your Twitter, Facebook, and other social media accounts each time there is a new update to them. You can customize the tweets to show the title of the new post, the link (shortened by your preferred URL shortener), and even add a RT @username or via @username so you let the blogger know you’re always tweeting their posts. It’s a great way to curate content for your audience automatically, but just be careful that the blogs whose feeds you use always publish quality content.

Visibli

visibli home page
Visibili is a free service used by @brett@davepeck, and @denisewakeman that lets you create a custom sharing bar that goes with any links you share through their service. This custom share bar can have your name and social sharing icons as well as links to your website and even a Tweet button which recommends your Twitter accounts and Facebook Like button that connects to your fan page. It can be connected to your Tweetdeck or Seesmic desktop apps, installed on your blog for outgoing links, and installed as a bookmarklet on your browser bookmark toolbar as a quick way to share with your customization at the top of every link!

What Do You and Your Favorite Twitterers Use?

Now it’s your turn. What Twitter apps do you use to manage and update your Twitter account? What apps do your favorite Twitterers use? Share your thoughts on these and other apps in the comments!
Also, if you want to find out what others are using, my method was viewing their tweets in HootSuite which lists what application sent the Twitter user’s update. It’s a great way to find out what apps are working the best for people your industry!

Twitter is experimenting with ads on user streams

Twitter is trialing ad units on users’ profiles pages in a new experiment, reports Recode.
The new test sees promoted tweets being added to streams on users’ pages. They are separated from traditional tweets by breaks and include a ‘Suggested by Twitter’ label.

At present, the ads appear only to users who are logged in. That’s probably because it allows Twitter to target ads based on users’ interests.
Displaying these ads to users who aren’t logged in might also make sense at some point — the company says it has over 500 million visitors per month who don’t have an account or choose not to log in. Twitter recently partnered with Google to display tweets in search results, and could look into gathering search data to target ads to logged out users.
As with Twitter’s other experiment, the ads are currently live on Web and mobile only for select users.

Verified Twitter users can now hide offensive tweets from notifications

Twitter today released an update to its iOS app that delivered a new feature for some verified users called ‘Quality filter.’
Quality filter allows verified users to hide tweets in notifications containing threats, offensive or abusive language, duplicate content or that are sent from suspicious accounts, similar to the old “filtered” option users had previously. The renamed feature appears to be still rolling out.

Spotted by Anil Dash, co-founder at ThinkUp, the new option is available under the notifications tab and allows verified users to hide offending tweets. It’s not clear if it’s going to roll out to the wider Twitter service in the future, but we certainly hope it does.
Previously, verified users could enable a “tailored” timeline that hid spam, this option appears to replace that and functions in almost the exact same way, however it now works across all notification types.
The new feature comes just weeks after Twitter’s CEO admitted that the company does not deal with abuse on the service appropriately and promised that the company will do more to help in the future.

Twitter launches new analytics home page and promotion feature

Twitter wants to make it easier to promote your business on its platform.
Starting today, businesses will see a new homepage on analytics.twitter.com. The new dashboard provides a holistic view of your tweet activity, including info such as:
  • How many times you’ve tweeted
  • How many people have seen your tweets, visited your profile, mentioned your username or followed your account
  • How many times people have shared your links
  • Your top Tweets and followers per month

There’s also a new feature for small business advertisers.
A little over a month ago, the company introduced a ‘quick promote‘ feature that lets users select their most popular tweets and pay to boost them directly from the analytics dashboard.
Today’s new feature simplifies the process further – quick promote is now available directly from your Twitter profile.
The new account home is now available for all advertisers, while quick promote will go live for all small business advertisers in the coming weeks.

Twitter launches friend-finding and two-factor verification for Digits

If you’re a developer using Twitter’s Digits to sign users up for your app or service, get ready to offer a more secure log-in and a way for users to quickly find their friends.
Today Digits introduced friend-finding and two-factor verification to the service. Friend-finding scans the user’s contact list and makes it easier for them to find friends already using the service when they sign and if they are current users, they can be alerted when friends join a service. Twitter says that Digits will match “both mutual or one-way connections.”
For the privacy conscious, the new feature is opt-in and Twitter says it won’t share the social graph users create in an app or service with third-party apps.
On the security front, Digits is enabling two-factor verification for signups. In addition to the phone number sign up, users can create a verification code that they will use to log-in. The code is a second layer of security for Digits. This would keep nefarious folks out of your accounts if you lost your phone or had your phone number spoofed.
More and more the phone is becoming a trusted device and for some, their only computing experience. Today’s news comes on the heels of Twilio’s acquisition of two-factor service Authy.
Digits, like Twitter’s other developer-facing products, is iterating pretty quickly. With other companies like Yahoo trying to woo developers, moving fast and focused is the only way to survive.

Twitter now has an official WordPress plugin

Twitter today announced that it’s releasing its first official Twitter plugin for WordPress that brings a bunch of Twitter functionality to your site easily.
The new plugin brings a plethora of features; it automatically generates Twitter Cards for your pages, enables Twitter Analytics, embeds video and adds a tweet button to posts in the admin interface.
There’s an option that allows you to tweak the look of embedded tweets on your site, so it matches your theme, along with a number of features that help users get started with Twitter advertising.
Twitter’s new plugin is available now, for free.

Twitter is testing analytics on the Web for individual tweets

looks like Twitter is experimenting with a new analytics feature on the Web; some users can now see statistics for individual tweets on their timeline.
I’m able to access the analytics by clicking on a small bar graph button to the right of the favorites button. My colleagues, on the other hand, do not see the feature at all.

Once you click, you’ll be presented with information such as views, favorites and clickthroughs.

Some other users spotted the new feature as as well:

While you can access per-tweet stats using Twitter’s analytics dashboard, this is the first time we’ve seen the feature become directly available on Web timelines.
It makes it easier to view insights on your tweets at a glance, and the button’s prominence right next to your other commonly used functions could introduce analytics to users who otherwise wouldn’t use them or even know they existed.
That said, it’s not the first time the company has implemented analytics right on timelines; Twitter first experimented with the additional details for individual tweets on mobile devices back in November.
We’ve contacted Twitter for more information and will update if we hear back.

This Twitter tool is all sorts of nonsense… but annoyingly irresistible - The Next Web

So You’re The __ is an oddly compelling experiment created by Ramsay Lanier, which encourages you to call out the funniest/coolest/best/worst/weirdest folks on Twitter.
Once you sign in with your Twitter credentials, you can create an award for any account you like, adding a reason why they’re the best or the weirdest or just so damn cool, and a GIF to illustrate that emotion.

So You’re The __ then tweets the subject of your affections/disdain/curiosity to alert them and gives you the option to share your creation through your own account.
It’s an ultimately pointless exercise but it’s hard not to respond in kind when someone decides you’re the weirdest.

10 Twitter Tools Used by Social Media Experts
