Today at Mobile World Congress Samsung unveiled a new version of its Gear VR headset that will be compatible with the S6 and S6 Edge.
The updated Gear VR Innovator Edition is 15 percent lighter, has USB compatibility for “extended usage time” and the company has redesigned the straps to be more comfortable to wear.
Samsung is also touting improved performance and better graphics, mostly thanks to improvements in the Galaxy S6 handset. The company isn’t giving the updated Gear VR a new name, but it does show the company’s commitment to its virtual reality headset.
Today at MWC in Barcelona, Spain, Samsung unveiled its two new flagship handsets for 2015: the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
Both of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 devices tout a 5.1” Quad HD (at a whopping 2560×1440 resolution) 577ppi display, a quad-core processor, 3GB DDR-4 memory, Super AMOLED display and will be available in 32, 64 and 128GB storage sizes.
The rear camera on the S6 is a 16 megapixel, f/1.9 shooter with optical image stabilization and the front camera is a 5 megapixel, f/1.9 shooter with “real time HDR.”
The new devices are the first Samsung flagships to sport a metal body, with the company touting it as “much tougher than other high end smartphones.” The company also worked to build a better fingerprint sensor that works more consistently.
The Galaxy S6 Edge has a gorgeous curved display that wraps around the side of the device and users can use that edge to interact with the phone in some interesting ways, like bringing up contacts.
Two big changes to the S6 are that there’s no expandable memory support and the battery is non-removable for the first time, however Samsung says this is fine as it charges significantly faster than the iPhone 6 and supports wireless charging.
Samsung also touted its redesigned software, which it says it made simpler and easy to use. It’s based on Android Lollipop, which sports Material Design, and likely was responsible for much of the simplification Samsung alludes to.
Both devices will be available in 20 countries from April 10. The S6 comes in white, black, gold and blue and the S6 Edge will be available in all those colors on top of an exclusive green.
